The importance and virtue of the tenth of Dhu'l-Hijjah

Allah Almighty is the Creator and Owner of this universe. Allah runs the system of the entire universe. Just as Allah has given superiority to Gabriel (AS) among the angels. Among the prophets, Muhammad has been given superiority. Ramadan has taken precedence over the months.
In the same way, Allah has given precedence to the first ten days of Dhu al-Hijjah over the rest of the days. It is important for us to know the importance and virtue of the tenth of Dhu'l-Hijjah because Allah has given these days a very important place.
Zul-Hijjah is an important month in Islamic history. For some reason, it has a distinction and a virtue. Especially the first decade of Dhu al-Hijjah is very important. In today's discussion, we will explain the importance and virtue of Dhu'l-Hijjah and the tenth of Dhu'l-Hijjah:

(1) The sacred month:

Dhu al-Hijjah is a sacred month. In that sense, it is possible we should avoid war this month. Even if the enemy becomes an attacker, we should not take the initiative in attacking him.
Allah said: Ų„ِŁ†َّ Ų¹ِŲÆَّŲ©َ Ų§Ł„Ų“ُّŁ‡ُŁˆŲ±ِ Ų¹ِŁ†ْŲÆَ Ų§Ł„Ł„َّŁ‡ِ Ų§Ų«ْŁ†َŲ§ Ų¹َŲ“َŲ±َ Ų“َŁ‡ْŲ±ًŲ§ ŁِŁŠ ŁƒِŲŖَŲ§ŲØِ Ų§Ł„Ł„َّŁ‡ِ ŁŠَŁˆْŁ…َ Ų®َŁ„َŁ‚َ Ų§Ł„Ų³َّŁ…َŲ§ŁˆَŲ§ŲŖِ ŁˆَŲ§Ł„ْŲ£َŲ±ْŲ¶َ Ł…ِŁ†ْŁ‡َŲ§ Ų£َŲ±ْŲØَŲ¹َŲ©ٌ ŲُŲ±ُŁ…ٌ Ų°َŁ„ِŁƒَ Ų§Ł„ŲÆِّŁŠŁ†ُ Ų§Ł„ْŁ‚َŁŠِّŁ…ُ ŁَŁ„َŲ§ ŲŖَŲøْŁ„ِŁ…ُŁˆŲ§ ŁِŁŠŁ‡ِŁ†َّ Ų£َŁ†ْŁُŲ³َŁƒُŁ…ْ ŁˆَŁ‚َŲ§ŲŖِŁ„ُŁˆŲ§ Ų§Ł„ْŁ…ُŲ“ْŲ±ِŁƒِŁŠŁ†َ ŁƒَŲ§ŁَّŲ©ً ŁƒَŁ…َŲ§ ŁŠُŁ‚َŲ§ŲŖِŁ„ُŁˆŁ†َŁƒُŁ…ْ ŁƒَŲ§ŁَّŲ©ً ŁˆَŲ§Ų¹ْŁ„َŁ…ُŁˆŲ§ Ų£َŁ†َّ Ų§Ł„Ł„َّŁ‡َ Ł…َŲ¹َ Ų§Ł„ْŁ…ُŲŖَّŁ‚ِŁŠŁ†َ۔ Twelve months have passed since the day God created the heavens and the earth. Four months of them are sacred. This is a strong religion, so do not wrong your souls during these days. Just as the polytheists fight you in every situation, so do you fight them in every situation. And know that Allah is with those who guard (against evil). (Surat at-Tawbah, 36)
From this blessed verse, we learn that the a number of months is twelve. And four of these twelve months are sacred. The following hadith of the Prophet (PBUH) explains what those four months are:
Hazrat Abu Bakrah (RA) narrated from the Prophet (PBUH) that he said: Ų§Ł„Ų³َّŁ†َŲ©ُ Ų§Ų«ْŁ†َŲ§ Ų¹َŲ“َŲ±َ Ų“َŁ‡ْŲ±ًŲ§، Ł…ِŁ†ْŁ‡َŲ§ Ų£َŲ±ْŲØَŲ¹َŲ©ٌ ŲُŲ±ُŁ…ٌ، Ų«َŁ„Ų§َŲ«َŲ©ٌ Ł…ُŲŖَŁˆَŲ§Ł„ِŁŠَŲ§ŲŖٌ: Ų°ُŁˆ Ų§Ł„Ł‚َŲ¹ْŲÆَŲ©ِ ŁˆَŲ°ُŁˆ Ų§Ł„ŲِŲ¬َّŲ©ِ ŁˆَŲ§Ł„Ł…ُŲَŲ±َّŁ…ُ، ŁˆَŲ±َŲ¬َŲØُ Ł…ُŲ¶َŲ±َ۔ The year is twelve months long. Four of them are sacred. These are three consecutive months. Dhikada, Dhu'l-Hijjah and Muharram and (the fourth month) is Rajab. (Sahih Al-Bukhari, Hadith No. 3197)

(2) Month of Hajj:

Dhu'l-Hijjah is also significant in that Muslims perform a sacred duty such as Hajj during this month. To perform this sacred duty, Muslims go to the Ka'bah and perform this sacred duty. This great act of worship shows the unity of the Muslims that all the rich and the poor try to please Allah by wearing the same clothes and standing in the same row before Allah.

(3) The first ten days of Dhu'l-Hijjah:

Due to the tenth of Dhu'l-Hijjah, the importance of Dhu'l-Hijjah increases. The reward of worship performed in these days is better and superior to other days. The virtue of the tenth of Dhu'l-Hijjah is also understood from the fact that Allah has sworn ten days.
Allah said: ŁˆَŲ§Ł„ْŁَŲ¬ْŲ±ِ۔ ŁˆَŁ„َŁŠَŲ§Ł„ٍ Ų¹َŲ“ْŲ±ٍ۔ I swear by the time of Fajr and the oath of ten days. (Surat al-Fajr, verse no. 02-01)
Most commentators refer to the ten days in this verse as the first ten days of Dhu al-Hijjah. The virtue of these days ie the tenth of Dhu'l-Hijjah is also proved by the following hadith.
Hazrat Abdullah bin Abbas (RA) narrates that the Prophet (PBUH) said: «Ł…َŲ§ Ų§Ł„Ų¹َŁ…َŁ„ُ ŁِŁŠ Ų£َŁŠَّŲ§Ł…ٍ Ų£َŁْŲ¶َŁ„َ Ł…ِŁ†ْŁ‡َŲ§ ŁِŁŠ Ł‡َŲ°ِŁ‡ِ؟» Ł‚َŲ§Ł„ُŁˆŲ§: ŁˆَŁ„Ų§َ Ų§Ł„Ų¬ِŁ‡َŲ§ŲÆُ؟ Ł‚َŲ§Ł„َ: «ŁˆَŁ„Ų§َ Ų§Ł„Ų¬ِŁ‡َŲ§ŲÆُ، Ų„ِŁ„َّŲ§ Ų±َŲ¬ُŁ„ٌ Ų®َŲ±َŲ¬َ ŁŠُŲ®َŲ§Ų·ِŲ±ُ ŲØِŁ†َŁْŲ³ِŁ‡ِ ŁˆَŁ…َŲ§Ł„ِŁ‡ِ، ŁَŁ„َŁ…ْ ŁŠَŲ±ْŲ¬ِŲ¹ْ ŲØِŲ“َŁŠْŲ”ٍ» There is no better deed than the ten days of Dhu al-Hijjah. The Companions asked: Is there no jihad? The Prophet (PBUH) said: Not even jihad, except for the person who risked his life and property and did not return with anything (ie he was martyred in the way of Allaah.)(Sahih Al-Bukhari, Hadith No. 969)
From this hadith, we learn that whatever we do in the tenth of Dhu'l-Hijjah reaches its extremity in terms of virtue. And no action can compete with the action taken in those days. However, a person who sacrifices himself in the way of Allah, his deeds are equal to or better than the deeds done in those days.

(4) Fasting for the first nine days of Dhu'l-Hijjah:

The tenth of Dhu'l-Hijjah has such a virtue that the Prophet (PBUH) used to fast for the first nine days of this month.
Some of the wives of the Prophet (PBUH) said: «ŁƒَŲ§Ł†َ Ų±َŲ³ُŁˆŁ„ُ Ų§Ł„Ł„َّŁ‡ِ ŲµَŁ„َّŁ‰ Ų§Ł„Ł„Ł‡ُ Ų¹َŁ„َŁŠْŁ‡ِ ŁˆَŲ³َŁ„َّŁ…َ ŁŠَŲµُŁˆŁ…ُ ŲŖِŲ³ْŲ¹َ Ų°ِŁŠ Ų§Ł„ْŲِŲ¬َّŲ©ِ۔The Prophet (PBUH) used to fast for the first nine days of Dhu'l-Hijjah.

  Ƙ Resolving a conflict:

The above hadith proves that the Prophet (PBUH) used to fast for the first nine days of Dhu al-Hijjah. But Hazrat Ayesha (RA) says: «Ł…َŲ§ Ų±َŲ£َŁŠْŲŖُ Ų±َŲ³ُŁˆŁ„َ Ų§Ł„Ł„Ł‡ِ ŲµَŁ„َّŁ‰ Ų§Ł„Ł„Ł‡ُ Ų¹َŁ„َŁŠْŁ‡ِ ŁˆَŲ³َŁ„َّŁ…َ ŲµَŲ§Ų¦ِŁ…ًŲ§ ŁِŁŠ Ų§Ł„ْŲ¹َŲ“ْŲ±ِ Ł‚َŲ·ُّ» I never saw the Prophet (PBUH) fasting during the tenth of Dhu'l-Hijjah. (Saheeh Muslim, Hadeeth No. 1176)
Imam Nawawi (RA) says that this hadith of Hazrat Ayesha (RA) gives the illusion of the abomination of fasting on the tenth of Dhu'l-Hijjah.
But this is not the case, but it is mustahabb to fast on the tenth of Dhu'l-Hijjah. Especially fasting on the ninth of Dhu'l-Hijjah, the virtue of which is proven by the hadiths.
It is possible that the Prophet (PBUH) did not fast in any year due to any illness or journey. It is also possible that Hazrat Ayesha (RA) did not see the Prophet (PBUH) fasting in those days.
But this does not prove that the Prophet (PBUH) did not fast the tenth of Dhu'l-Hijjah (ie, the first nine days of Dhu'l-Hijjah).

(5) The virtue of fasting 'Arafah:

One of the ten days of Dhu al-Hijjah is also the day of 'Arafah. The day of 'Arafah falls on the 9th of Zul-Hajj. Although the Prophet (PBUH) used to fast for nine days of Dhu al-Hijjah, it is better to fast on that day. The virtue of this action is proved by the following hadith.
Hazrat Qatadah (RA) says that when the Prophet (PBUH) was asked about the virtue of fasting on the day of 'Arafah, He said: «ŁŠُŁƒَŁِّŲ±ُ Ų§Ł„Ų³َّŁ†َŲ©َ Ų§Ł„ْŁ…َŲ§Ų¶ِŁŠَŲ©َ ŁˆَŲ§Ł„ْŲØَŲ§Ł‚ِŁŠَŲ©َ» (Fasting on the Day of Arafa,) removes the sins of the past and the coming year. (Sahih Muslim, Hadith No. 1162)

  Ƙ A Question:

Here we can ask a question, how will Allah forgive sins next year even though man has not committed sins yet next year? One answer to this is that Allah will protect man from sins in the coming year.
And the second answer is that Allah will reward man with such a reward and mercy through this fast that this mercy and reward will become the expiation for man's future sins.

With the special help of Allah, we have explained in this article the importance and virtue of the tenth of Dhu'l-Hijjah. We have also answered some questions. May Allah create sincerity in our worship and protect us from hypocrisy. Amen!
